Of all the students in Sheridan High, Robert Haleys mother, Beth, was the best looking by a long shot. She was what they called statuesque standing 511 and blessed with the figure of a swimsuit model. Back then if you didnt know she was 38 youd probably have guessed her to be in her early 30s at the very most. She was divorced some time before she and her son Robert moved to the little midwestern town of Sheridan and the two of them lived on the edge of town where she pretty much kept to herself, not socializing with the other moms or anyone else, for that matter.
He worked, he stayed in shape, he was kind to his family, and he wasnt happy. Michael was 39 years old and listlessly going through the motions. Lately, he worried that the last throes of his virility were upon him. After all, his 40th birthday was approaching. Long, solemn stares into the bathroom vanity marked each passing morning. But, despite the lack of attention his wife gave him, he was still proud of his reflection. His thick auburn hair was just starting to turn gray. He kept his beard, still very much a youthful red, trimmed close, and his jaw stood out in hard angles, framing a large handsome face. The blue eyes turned heads. All 63 of him was lean muscle. His broad shoulders and long torso were sculpted for walking tall in tailored suits.
I hate summer. I dont like the heat, I hate the beach because of the sand and the overcrowding, and just in general everything is too bright. Plus, summer means swim suit shopping and I hate that pretty much more than anything. However, my parents are firm believers in the Summer Family Beach Vacation cliché so here I am, on my way to the store with my older brother to buy a swimsuit.
It was just after six oclock when Marc arrived home. His mother, who was still dressed in the sleek black yoga pants and hot pink T-shirt that she had worn for her gym session, was standing in front of the microwave, watching something going around and around.
It was Saturday night and Lainey was holed up in her first floor apartment with her friends, Blair, Amanda and Stacy. They were helping her get ready for a night of clubbing in celebration of her birthday. They werent really old enough to get into the clubs but good quality, expensive fake IDs made that a non-issue. As the catchy, pop, chick tunes blared from the stereo, drinks were blended and poured as the girls debated the sexiness of each wardrobe choice.
The sun, its warmth, the sound of ocean waves, the sand and the breeze all let me know I was nowhere near home. As I laid out in the heat and let my skin feel alive once again, I kept my eyes closed and thought about how much I needed this vacation. It was overdue and I mentally made a note not to let it happen again. I had let myself get so deep into work and career that I had come close to burning out.
One thing I have learned while is that the best stories come from the most unexpected sources. As you know, I just celebrated my birthday. I went to the movies and saw The Purge 2016: Election Year. Shortly thereafter, I took a Lyft to my favorite Chinese restaurant, Ocean Buffet. The driver was a young and quite pretty girl name Sonia. She pulled up in this BMW 530 that while a beautiful vehicle, it was very cramped in the front seat. I swear I thought a 5 series would have more space. I know at 6 foot 3 and 360 pounds Im a big man but my knees were in the dashboard. Im glad Sonia was eye candy as she took my mind off how cramped I felt in that front seat.
